Henry George Birthplace

The original Henry George Birthplace was a small, 2½-story Georgian-style brick dwelling. At some point in the 1890's, the third floor was enlarged with a mansard roof, and a second-floor Victorian sheet metal bay window was added. Selective demolition revealed that the original fire box and flue had been removed; however, the outline of the fire box and the hearth was intact in the wall and the floor. Differently colored plaster outlining the overall dimensions of the fire box, chimneypiece, and the side closet was also found.

Our residential architect performed the restoration and returned the front of the building to its original 1839 appearance. A new cedar roof and dormer were installed on the first floor, and a new first-floor window and foor with elliptical transom were modified based on an extensive study of contemporary Georgian homes in the neighborhood.

This garage was renovated into a stylish guesthouse. Our residential architect transformed this simple garage into an updated living space with even more storage options. Take a look at the before and after pictures...

Lords New Church

Originally designed by noted architect George Howe as an art studio, this structure was part of a working sheep and cow farm compound. Now used as a church, the former studio is constructed of local fieldstone with granite window surrounds and features a loggia of salomonica columns. A new vestibule was added to provide a cot room, an additional bathroom, a storage room, and handicap-accessible features. Due to the simplicity of the existing façade, the east elevation of the addition was left unadorned. For this reason, our renovations architect decided the doorway would be placed on the north façade. The new addition is constructed of stone taken from the same quarry as the original building. Flat terracotta roof tiles were reused from another building on the compound. The roof rafters are red oak 4x8s with mortise and tenon collar beams and exposed planks above. The interior red oak doors, casings, sash, millwork, and wrought-iron door hardware were all custom-made for this bueilding.
